Overall Fly Tying Competition
There was an incredibly close finish for the season’s overall tying competition, with only 2 points separating first & second, with a total of 600 points awarded! There were very clear but different winners for each of the two competitions. Read on to see the results.
Mystery fly competition 2025/26
A fun evening held on 10th December 2025. The fly was finally revealed by this years “setter”, Dave Price, as a Teal Blue & Silver, from page 168 of the tying bible, and this year we had 9 entries. Unfortunately, last year’s winner Jim couldn’t compete this year due to an argument with a lathe, but that left the field wide open for everyone else.
People found rolling the delicate Teal wing quite difficult, but eventually all 9 flies were lined up for anonymous judging, where people voted for a number, not knowing who tied each fly.

In equal 4th place, with 28 points each were
Chris Leat & Alan Varley
In 3rd place was Nick Boyd with 44 points
In second place with 54 points was Dave Price
And the winner, with 81 points was Dave Green.

Set Fly Competition
14th January 2026
There was a record entry of 11 flies in this year’s competition, which featured the set fly of a Black Mamba. Many members elected to tie the fly on the evening, with others having tied it at their leisure over the Christmas break. The overall quality of the flies was really impressive, and it was difficult to make a choice when judging them.
The places went to:
4th Place – Dave Glen with 45 points
3rd Place - Chris Leat with 59 Points
2nd Place – Dave Green with 69 points
And the winner was Dave Price with 96 points.
Dave Price had 6 members placing him first, with Dave Green, Chris Leat and Dave Glen each having 2 votes placing them in first place, so a resounding win for Dave Price.

Overall Championship
With Dave Green holding a 27-point lead over Dave Price after the Mystery Fly competition, Dave P was incredibly unfortunate not to have overturned that lead in the set fly competition, winning by 25 points! So the final scores ended up with Dave Price having achieved 148 points over the 2 legs, and our winner this year was Dave Green with an incredible 150 points!
